For a brief period before in 2020 the world went to hell, it was impossible to walk around Tokyo without seeing some kind of billboard promoting Echo, a collaborative album between mainstream J-Pop’s two most distinctive mainstays not named Ringo Shiina. While both artists have enjoyed a lot of mainstream success, particularly with YUKI’s hugely influential band JUDY AND MARY, the collaboration feels completely natural and not at all contrived.

With production and mixing handled by some of the best in the business right now (TENDRE, Mabanua, Seiho, Shinichi Osawa, etc), the end result is half an hour of diverse and phenomenally well-crafted j-pop featuring charismatic and energetic performances by two of the genre’s most idiosyncratic voices.

2020年に世界中が暗いモードへ堕ちる前のひととき、東京を歩いていて、椎名林檎と並んで J-POPシーンの中でももっとも個性的な女性アーティストである Chara と YUKI のコラボレーション・アルバム『Echo』の看板広告を目にしない日はなかった。2人ともメインストリームで成功を収めているアーティストであり、YUKI が所属していたバンド＝JUDY AND MARY は日本以外でも多くのファンを持っているのだが、このコラボ作品はまったく自然体な雰囲気で、作為的な面がないように感じられる。 

プロデュースやミキシングを担当したのは TENDRE や Mabanua、Seiho、大沢伸一など、もっとも旬な実力アーティストたち。そして、特徴的かつカリスマ性を兼ね備えた2人のヴォーカルが多才なプロデューサー陣の手によって料理され、驚異的な出来映えを誇る J-POPアルバムがここに完成したのだ。
