For reasons somewhat beyond my understanding, avant-garde metal outfit Boris have always been one of the better known Japanese acts among western music fans. Of course, they have been consistently brilliant, prolific, and constantly touring for almost 30 years, but their oppressively heavy drone/sludge approach to rock music is far from palatable to the average listener.

2020’s NO, a summation and externalisation of all the negative energy that has surrounded this year, is no exception. This time, however, the songs are shorter and more intense, leaning into their more punk and hardcore sensibilities. Apocalyptic music for apocalyptic times; an explosive cry of defiance in all caps, loud and clear: NO.

アヴァンギャルドなメタル・サウンドを轟かせる Boris は、欧米の音楽ファンの間でもよく知られる日本のロック・バンドである。もちろん、彼らは約30年にも及ぶ活動を通してすばらしい作品を一貫して発表し続けており、多作で、常にツアーを行っているのだが、その圧迫感のある重いドローン／スラッジーなサウンド・アプローチは、おそらく一般的なリスナーにとっては受け入れがたいものだろう。 

2020年は、突然訪れた未知のウイルスによりネガティヴなエネルギーが世界中を覆っていたが、この『NO』も例外ではない。さらに今作は、よりパンクやハードコアの感性に傾倒し、曲は短く、より激しくなっている。まさに黙示録的な時代の黙示録的な作品であり、彼らははっきりと全角で＜NO＞という反抗の叫びを爆発させている。
