Before his emergence as a force to be reckoned with in the Kyoto hip hop scene, I briefly met Daichi during his tenure studying art in my hometown of London in summer of 2016. We didn’t much talk about music, so it’s been a wonderful coincidence to see him frequently reappear on my radar over the last few years. Since his return to Kyoto in 2017, I’ve had a few encounters with his music, frequently collaborating with some of the big hitters of Japan’s hip hop scene, and culminating in the release of his epic 2019 album Andless.
Elephant in My Room is a shorter and tighter affair, spanning six tracks over 22 minutes, but continues to demonstrate his flexibility in blending influences. Album opener Splash harkens back to his time spent in London with intricate, bilingual grime flows spat boisterously over dark production, before transitioning into Netsukikyu, a tender R&B-tinged jam that wouldn’t sound out of place in a COLORS session. The album continues shifting gears throughout, and Yamamoto sounds perfectly comfortable over every track. Hugely fitting, then, that the album depicts his small home studio, packed from floor to ceiling in books and music gear. It’s busy and chaotic, and yet, Daichi seems perfectly at home the whole time.
