Apocalyptic times call for apocalyptic music. With their debut album, Boil Shock, Tokyo’s HYPER SARDINES may well be singing the song that plays at the end of the world. Long time veterans of the Tokyo independent music scene, HYPER SARDINES are a duo consisting of vocalist Kamano Ai (former vocalist of Haisuinonasa) and drummer GOTO (drummer of DALLJUB STEP CLUB).
The result of this union is a product that certainly bears a passing resemblance to both bands; there’s Haisuinonasa-esque use of short, staccato samples to create increasingly complex melodies, and GOTO’s preference for frenetic, Chicago footwork inspired drum patterns that are all over Dalljub’s earlier work, but Boil Shock resists getting too comfortable in either member’s wheelhouse. Most striking is the complete lack of synthesisers or conventional instrumentation, with the exception of GOTO’s virtuoso drumming. Instead, Kamano samples and dissects her own vocals, creating a choir of glitchy scattered melodies, at once stoic and machine like, yet imbued with the warmth and sublimity of an opera singer.
The end result, mostly forgoing lyrics in favour of scatting and indeterminable vocalisations, is an album that manages to be otherworldly and beautiful while being deeply unsettling and uncanny. Album highlights include Hyper Navigation, which juxtaposes operatic vocals against the coldness of a car sat nav, Japanese Doll, which fuses the group’s fixation on hyperreality with traditional songwriting, and the absolutely terrifying album closer GOD, which wears its mission statement right there on its title. GOTO and Kamano have come up with something truly unique here. HYPER SARDINES are never going to appear on the Oricon charts, but it’s worth joining the cult before the venues get too crowded.
