Body & SOUL is an event that started in the mid 90's at VINYL, a club in New York, and since its arrival in Japan in 2002, has been quite popular among house music lovers in Japan. One of the anthemic songs that brought even more excitement to the floor was AK Akemi Kakihara's "Say That You Love Me."

The song, which was a worldwide hit in the early 2000s, was reissued in a 20th anniversary picture sleeve 7-inch release at Record Story Day Black Friday on November 25, 2022, and sold out immediately.

"Say That You Love Me 20th Anniversary Limited Edition"

Incidentally, during Record Store Day 2019, the original Francois K Remix of "Say That You Love Me" was edited by Danny Krivit for 7-inch release (both of the aforementioned Body & SOUL), which also sold out quickly, further indicating the international popularity of this song.

Akemi Kakihara ("AK") is a global-minded artist who moved to New York in 2001 and has been creating dance music there ever since. She released "Beautiful You" in April 2022, her first single in some 12 years,.

The single, with its euphoric melody and AK's dreamy, long drawn-out vocals, was remixed by Hex Hector, who won a Grammy for his remix of Jennifer Lopez's "Waiting for Tonight." AK's public and private partner, Danny Krivit, edited versions that were released in May and September of the same year.

Once again, AK has delighted house lovers, and to cap off the year's activities, two new remixes of "Beautiful You" are slated for release as singles in December, 2022.

Both songs feature up-and-coming creator Toshiyuki Tsuruha, or "TsuruSwing."The album features a "vocal mix" version of "Beautiful You" in which AK's vocals are gracefully interwoven with deep-seated piano and dramatic synths, plus a "chill mix" version in which you are gently enveloped by AK's sensitive voice.

"Beautiful You (TsuruSwing Vocal Mix)" was released on December 16, 2022, while "Beautiful You (TsuruSwing ChillMix)" has a December 23 release date.

そのフロアを一段と沸かせていたアンセム曲のひとつに、AK Akemi Kakiharaの「Say That You Love Me」がある。

「Beautiful You(TsuruSwing Vocal Mix)」はすでに12月16日に配信されているが、「Beautiful You(TsuruSwing ChillMix)」は12月23日に配信リリースとなっている。

To Westerners, the words Samurai, Ninja and Geisha conjure up an image of Japan that is exotic, mysterious and culturally fascinating. This aspect of ancient Japan is reflected in the music of Meitei, who creates a unique sound that combines ambient music and the atmosphere of traditional Japan under the concept ‘Lost Japanese Mood’.

Meitei is a solo artist based in Hiroshima, Japan. His debut album “Kaidan (2018)” was named 'Best Experimental Album' by Pitchfork, and is highly acclaimed. The album is characterized by nostalgic music concoctions that weave together old Japanese documentary footage and films.

The song "Akira Kurosawa" (named after the legendary Japanese film director), included in “Kofū II” released in 2021, is a great place to start.

Favourite track: Akira Kurosawa

Other works include an album based on ghost stories and songs with motifs of Kawanabe Kyōsai (a Ukiyoe artist active from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period), Sadayakko Kawakami (a legendary prewar actress), and her husband Otojiro (a renowned Japanese actor). Although only Japanese people with a broad knowledge of old Japanese culture can understand these figures, these songs, which reflect the mood of the times, have the power to evoke the nostalgic and mysterious original landscape that is etched deep in the DNA of the Japanese people.

Favourite track: Sadayakko

It is interesting to note that it was the Singaporean labels Evening Chants and KITCHEN. LABEL, which were quick to recognize Meitei's talent and release his works. It is possible to assume that the appeal of his music is due to his Asian origin, but considering that he is also recognized in the ambient music world in Europe and the United States, his support is not based on mere exotic interest.

His true strength is the visual evocation of sensory images such as atmosphere and texture, and the construction of sounds that evoke naïve mental landscapes. In this way his music inspires the human soul, regardless of country, race, or culture.

The struggle for a sense of identity has plagued Japanese idol pop for a long time. With the rise of K-pop as the dominant force in popular music, and the subsequent decline of AKB48 and their ilk, we’re well into an era marked by subversive and largely different idol pop. The likes of Seiko Oomori and BiS went in a darker, more rock oriented direction, sora tob sakana and Maison book girl went for a complex, math-rock style, while Especia and The Dance for Philosophy opted for a funky homage to the glitz and glamour of the bubble era with notes of new jack swing and vaporwave.

Helmed by producer/composer Koutarou Mizuma, Yureru Landscape’s debut, Deadline, manages to cover all of those styles at once, leading to a set of well-composed and enjoyable tracks which occasionally suffer from a lack of cohesion. The album starts strongly, with intro track Crave segueing elegantly into Sayonara Haru, a breezy prog number featuring all four members singing in unison over some intricate twinkly melodies that wouldn’t sound out of place on a haisuinonasa record.

Legal High combines the album’s catchiest hook with some seriously funky slap bass, while The Blues merges Mizuma’s knack for exciting chord progressions with some quality playing from guitarist Yuki Miki. It’s one of the best tracks on the album, but does feature a bizarre vocal take at the end wherein the main refrain (“this is my blues”) is repeated by a single vocalist whose flat notes seem to be at odds with the pitch correction. It wouldn’t be a big deal, but these brief moments of rough vocal takes become a running theme as the album goes on.

mellow, put together by Mizuma and taito, forgoes the rock emphasis of previous tracks to usher in the second half of the album, a mixed bag of slower, funkier numbers, and it’s extremely effective here. Some solid guitar work accompanies some really lush production, and the group’s gentle vocals fit well with the more subdued instrumentals. Lead single Nichijousahanji then takes another genre leap for some sparkly city pop. It’s a good track with some deft applications of synthesisers, but the lack of vocal polish is most evident here, and it sounds a little out of place with the rest of the record.

Yuutsuna machi no kiseki dials things back again for a stripped back soul ballad that doesn’t work quite as well as mellow or its follow up, Shinkai no Parade, which does a little more with its rapped vocals and easygoing 90’s vibe. Album closer 201 ties a nice bow on the whole thing, turning back to a sound more resemblant of crave and Sayonara Haru, with some complex guitar lines and the use of bells and piano to give the whole thing a wintery feel. It’s a nice conclusion to an album with a lot of charm, and lends some cohesion just when things seem to be losing their sense of direction. Mizuma is an excellent composer with some remarkable musicians in his camp, and the idols on the cover lend a good mix of personalities and charm to the whole affair. A little bit more polish and more time in the recording booth and this could have been a candidate for the best idol pop album of the year. As things are, Yureru Landscape are a diamond in the rough.

“Hi, my name is Kaho! Give me a signal that you’re there! It’s a perfect new song!” exclaims Kaho Nakamura, joyfully over a rapid banjo melody. She’s joined shortly after by a synth bass and a snapping breakbeat. This is KAPO, the introduction to her second album, NIA, and it might come as a surprise to long time fans. Where her debut album, 2018’s AINOU, was often a slower, more pensive affair with an emphasis on dense musical textures, NIA swings straight for the fences from the very start.

Tracks like KAPO and Syukuji opt for rapped vocal deliveries that wouldn’t sound out of place on an early Wednesday Campanella release. Standout track Sayonara Claire keeps the pace going, while reintroducing Nakamura’s trademark soulfulness and sophistication through tasteful application of bass, organ and strings. Interlude track voice memo #2 slows things down, ushering in the more mid-tempo centre of the album, returning the listener to more familiar territory. Blurrrrr is Nakamura at her absolute best, a four minute track that constantly introuduces and takes away new elements over complex chord progressions and some very strange vocal delivery, but somehow never feels overwhelming or difficult to follow. MIU emphasises Kaho’s strengths as a singer and songwriter, allowing her vocals to breathe over a more traditional piano ballad, while the acoustic Hank earns the dubious honour of being the most beautiful song ever written to be named Hank. Title track NIA skirts the border of being almost too saccharine, but provides some brightness and levity to the more emotionally taxing second half of the album, segueing elegantly into the ethereal and breathy voice memo #3.

It’s been four years since Nakamura’s debut, and she’s gone from strength to strength in that period. This album may run the risk of alienating certain fans who were hoping for more of Nakamura’s neo-soul leanings, but is a remarkably well thought out and deeply rewarding listen for anyone who is willing to give it the time.

“ Hi, My name is Kaho! / そこにいるって合図をしてよ / It’s perfect おnew song!

The group that gently invites you to just such a dreamy escape is Akane (Vo&G), Yamaguchi (G), and Kubo (Dr), a 19- to 20-year-old trio from Gunma, Japan. This is their debut EP, and their potential is immeasurable, as indicated by the release of such an unhurried and solemn work only three months after starting full-fledged activities as a music trio.

The band's dream-pop framework is spun with post-rock sound textures and shoegaze guitar sounds that recall Japan's taxas pandaa, Sweden's Immanu El, and the US’s Hammock. Akane's vocalization, which strikes the perfect balance between fragility and innocent emotion, is also a highlight, and is an important piece of the band's worldview. Perhaps in a few years, Akane will be a threat to Miraco of Yuragi and Moeka Shiotsuka of Hitsujibungaku.

With their debut album, Boil Shock, Tokyo’s HYPER SARDINES may well be singing the song that plays at the end of the world. Long time veterans of the Tokyo independent music scene, HYPER SARDINES are a duo consisting of vocalist Kamano Ai (former vocalist of Haisuinonasa) and drummer GOTO (drummer of DALLJUB STEP CLUB).

The result of this union is a product that certainly bears a passing resemblance to both bands; there’s Haisuinonasa-esque use of short, staccato samples to create increasingly complex melodies, and GOTO’s preference for frenetic, Chicago footwork inspired drum patterns that are all over Dalljub’s earlier work, but Boil Shock resists getting too comfortable in either member’s wheelhouse. Most striking is the complete lack of synthesisers or conventional instrumentation, with the exception of GOTO’s virtuoso drumming. Instead, Kamano samples and dissects her own vocals, creating a choir of glitchy scattered melodies, at once stoic and machine like, yet imbued with the warmth and sublimity of an opera singer.

The end result, mostly forgoing lyrics in favour of scatting and indeterminable vocalisations, is an album that manages to be otherworldly and beautiful while being deeply unsettling and uncanny. Album highlights include Hyper Navigation, which juxtaposes operatic vocals against the coldness of a car sat nav, Japanese Doll, which fuses the group’s fixation on hyperreality with traditional songwriting, and the absolutely terrifying album closer GOD, which wears its mission statement right there on its title. GOTO and Kamano have come up with something truly unique here. HYPER SARDINES are never going to appear on the Oricon charts, but it’s worth joining the cult before the venues get too crowded.

Ichiko Aoba continues her winning streak of beautiful, tender music that critics struggle to find words for other than serene. It’s understandable why that’s such a challenge, when every single moment of the album seems in service of the sense of gorgeous serenity that Aoba is known for—essentially the polar opposite of the previously reviewed Boris and Dos Monos releases.

Predominantly a collaboration with pianist, composer and arranger Taro Umebayashi, the album makes heavy use of bells, gently plucked strings, Aoba’s extremely soft vocal delivery, and complete silence as its main tools to convey a beautiful sense of place. One to be listened to with good headphones in a comfortable place.

Tokyo’s Dos Monos perform a victory lap followup to their excellent 2019 album Dos City with a 15-minute long EP of off-kilter bangers that in spite of its insanity, shows the group at their most focused. Noisy, dissonant and chaotic, and yet had me nodding the whole time.

Somewhere between boom bap, Bomb Squad-esque sampling and production, a cavalier approach to melody, free jazz, punk rock, and something uniquely Japanese, Dos Siki is a great example of how you can still have a lot of fun while breaking boundaries and wildly experimenting. Get in while you still can.

Of course, they have been consistently brilliant, prolific, and constantly touring for almost 30 years, but their oppressively heavy drone/sludge approach to rock music is far from palatable to the average listener.

2020’s NO, a summation and externalisation of all the negative energy that has surrounded this year, is no exception. This time, however, the songs are shorter and more intense, leaning into their more punk and hardcore sensibilities. Apocalyptic music for apocalyptic times; an explosive cry of defiance in all caps, loud and clear: NO.

Favourite track: Fundamental Error

While both artists have enjoyed a lot of mainstream success, particularly with YUKI’s hugely influential band JUDY AND MARY, the collaboration feels completely natural and not at all contrived.

With production and mixing handled by some of the best in the business right now (TENDRE, Mabanua, Seiho, Shinichi Osawa, etc), the end result is half an hour of diverse and phenomenally well-crafted j-pop featuring charismatic and energetic performances by two of the genre’s most idiosyncratic voices.

With his departure from the band at the end of 2017, a follow up to 2015’s excellent Apanda seemed inevitable. Less expected is how sparse and dark this record is compared to its predecessor or any of Yoshida’s output with Zazen Boys.

While the album does manage to be pretty funky and even danceable in places, Epithesi is a largely introspective and ambient affair that mines a lot of beauty from minimal production and Yoshida’s baritone voice. Rewardingly for hardcore fans, the title track includes a reprise of a 12939db song, Yoshida’s pre-zazen project.

In three years, the young quartet have put out three records, all of which are unique and distinct evolutions on their sound. While Kaikuushiki doesn’t quite reach the heights of last year’s Shichijoumai (possibly my favourite album of 2019), Kaikuushiki sees the band embark for the third time on a genre-hopping adventure that blurs the lines of j-pop, R&B, jazz, alternative rock, bossa nova and electronica.

Frontwoman and songwriter Miyo eschews rhythm guitar for a marked improvement in her vocal performance, giving more space for pianist Mayu to lay down a variety of elaborate and yet immediately catchy and accessible harmonies — Edoga-Sullivan’s Haruka Sakamoto dishes out some tasteful riffage when guitars do make an appearance. It’ll be a crime if these guys aren’t one of Japan’s biggest bands within the next few years.

We didn’t much talk about music, so it’s been a wonderful coincidence to see him frequently reappear on my radar over the last few years. Since his return to Kyoto in 2017, I’ve had a few encounters with his music, frequently collaborating with some of the big hitters of Japan’s hip hop scene, and culminating in the release of his epic 2019 album Andless.

Elephant in My Room is a shorter and tighter affair, spanning six tracks over 22 minutes, but continues to demonstrate his flexibility in blending influences. Album opener Splash harkens back to his time spent in London with intricate, bilingual grime flows spat boisterously over dark production, before transitioning into Netsukikyu, a tender R&B-tinged jam that wouldn’t sound out of place in a COLORS session. The album continues shifting gears throughout, and Yamamoto sounds perfectly comfortable over every track. Hugely fitting, then, that the album depicts his small home studio, packed from floor to ceiling in books and music gear. It’s busy and chaotic, and yet, Daichi seems perfectly at home the whole time.

As a long time fan of jazz and hip hop, I’ve always had a healthy degree of skepticism towards the label of jazz-hop, or jazz-rap. However, any reservations I might have towards needless flourish or a smug sense of superiority towards more mainstream hip hop are totally gone here.

Choulai’s approach to songcraft is tasteful, incredibly well considered, and wildly experimental. Choulai flits effortlessly from virtuosic Coleman-esque free jazz to outright bangers, sometimes on the same track. If you’re going to listen to any one album on this list, make it this one. Raw Denshi features a host of phenomenally well suited guest collaborators, including Kojoe, Manami Kakudo, and Daichi Yamamoto. On that note...

Makkuro, or Black, was the first of two full-length albums released this year, and the first to be released on Avex records. Personally, I was more into this one. While not much of a departure from the established tricot formula, there is a definite refinement at play here.

Welcome to the TKY03.jp blog, which will initially just consist of my musings on Japanese music and the Tokyo music scene, but hopefully will expand into something a lot larger in the near future. I really wasn’t sure how to kick this blog off, since with everything that happened in 2020 it’s been a little harder to keep tabs on what exactly is “going on” with the music scene.

This blog will mostly be dedicated to reviews of new releases and also music events, but before then I wanted to give some shine to some of my favourites that got me through 2020. This isn’t a countdown or a top 10, and is in no particular order. Jump in and let me know in the comments which of the releases you liked, or any that you'd add and recommend.

tky03.jptag:tky03.jp,2005:Post/64731672020-11-09T15:42:01+09:002022-02-17T14:03:23+09:00Discover the Japanese music world
Watch this space for new perspectives in Japanese music, music artists, and trends in the Japanese music industry.
