Papa New Guinean-born piano genius Aaron Choulai makes the impossible look easy. As a long time fan of jazz and hip hop, I’ve always had a healthy degree of skepticism towards the label of jazz-hop, or jazz-rap. However, any reservations I might have towards needless flourish or a smug sense of superiority towards more mainstream hip hop are totally gone here.

Choulai’s approach to songcraft is tasteful, incredibly well considered, and wildly experimental. Choulai flits effortlessly from virtuosic Coleman-esque free jazz to outright bangers, sometimes on the same track. If you’re going to listen to any one album on this list, make it this one. Raw Denshi features a host of phenomenally well suited guest collaborators, including Kojoe, Manami Kakudo, and Daichi Yamamoto. On that note...

Choulai の曲作りに対するアプローチは味わい深くてセンスがよく、信じられないほど計算され尽くしており、そして力強くて実験的でもある。コールマン風なフリージャズの名人芸から琴線にふれるメロディなど、ときにはそれらを同じ曲の中で軽々とこなしてしまうのだ。彼の作品をどれか1枚選ばないといけない場合、本作をぜひ聴いてほしい。『Raw Denshi 』には KOJOE や角銅真実、Daichi Yamamoto など、驚くほど適任なゲスト・ミュージシャンが多数参加している。そういえばオススメの曲を選ばなければ……。
