It feels weird to be disparaging about my favourite band but with no new output in almost a decade, bassist Ichiro Yoshida’s talent was feeling wasted on Zazen Boys. With his departure from the band at the end of 2017, a follow up to 2015’s excellent Apanda seemed inevitable. Less expected is how sparse and dark this record is compared to its predecessor or any of Yoshida’s output with Zazen Boys.

While the album does manage to be pretty funky and even danceable in places, Epithesi is a largely introspective and ambient affair that mines a lot of beauty from minimal production and Yoshida’s baritone voice. Rewardingly for hardcore fans, the title track includes a reprise of a 12939db song, Yoshida’s pre-zazen project.

好きなアーティストをけなすのも変な話だが、ZAZEN BOYS でベーシストとして活動していた約10年間、彼の作品があまり発表されなかったため吉田一郎の才能はムダになってしまった感があった。2017年末に ZAZEN BOYS を脱退したことで、2015年の名作『Apanda』に続くアルバムが誕生するのは必然のように思えた。しかし本作があまり期待されていなかったのは、前作や ZAZEN BOYS での吉田のどの作品と比べても、本作がいかにまばらでダークなものであるかということだ。 

このアルバムはファンキーでダンサブルな一面もあるが、‘Epithesi’ に代表されるような内省的でアンビエントな楽曲で構成され、ミニマルなプロダクションと吉田のバリトン・ヴォイスなどが多くの美しさを引き出している。コアなファンにはうれしいことに、彼が ZAZEN BOYS へ参加する前のプロジェクト、12939db の楽曲が ‘Epithesi’ で再演されている。
