To Westerners, the words Samurai, Ninja and Geisha conjure up an image of Japan that is exotic, mysterious and culturally fascinating. This aspect of ancient Japan is reflected in the music of Meitei, who creates a unique sound that combines ambient music and the atmosphere of traditional Japan under the concept ‘Lost Japanese Mood’. 

Meitei is a solo artist based in Hiroshima, Japan. His debut album “Kaidan (2018)” was named 'Best Experimental Album' by Pitchfork, and is highly acclaimed. The album is characterized by nostalgic music concoctions that weave together old Japanese documentary footage and films. 

The song "Akira Kurosawa" (named after the legendary Japanese film director), included in “Kofū II” released in 2021, is a great place to start.

Other works include an album based on ghost stories and songs with motifs of Kawanabe Kyōsai (a Ukiyoe artist active from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period), Sadayakko Kawakami (a legendary prewar actress), and her husband Otojiro (a renowned Japanese actor). Although only Japanese people with a broad knowledge of old Japanese culture can understand these figures, these songs, which reflect the mood of the times, have the power to evoke the nostalgic and mysterious original landscape that is etched deep in the DNA of the Japanese people.

It is interesting to note that it was the Singaporean labels Evening Chants and KITCHEN. LABEL, which were quick to recognize Meitei's talent and release his works. It is possible to assume that the appeal of his music is due to his Asian origin, but considering that he is also recognized in the ambient music world in Europe and the United States, his support is not based on mere exotic interest. 

His true strength is the visual evocation of sensory images such as atmosphere and texture, and the construction of sounds that evoke naïve mental landscapes. In this way his music inspires the human soul, regardless of country, race, or culture.

侍、忍者、芸者 etc... 外国人から見た日本のイメージといえば、やはりこれらが上位に挙げられるのだろう。 

日本人の感覚からいえばそれらに違和感を覚える人がほとんどだと思うのだが、欧米人からみたら神秘的で特異な日本文化はやはり魅力的なのだと思う。 

そこで今回は、＜LOST JAPANESE MOOD＞をコンセプトにアンビエント・ミュージックといにしえの日本の雰囲気を掛け合わせたとてもユニークな楽曲を作り出している冥丁を紹介したい。 

冥丁は広島で活動するソロ・アーティストで、2018年に発表されたデビュー・アルバム『怪談』がピッチフォークの＜ベスト・エクスペリメンタル・アルバム＞に選出されるなど、このシーンでは海外からの評価も高い。古い日本の記録映像や映画らを素材にDAWを駆使して紡ぐ、ノスタルジックなミュージック・コンクレートが特徴。 

外国人に一番わかりやすいところでいうと、2021年に発表された『古典Ⅱ』に「黒澤明」（世界を代表する日本人映画監督）という曲が収録されているので、まずはこの曲で彼の世界観を体験してみてほしい。

他の作品には怪談話をテーマにしたアルバムや、河鍋暁斎（幕末から明治にかけて活躍した浮世絵師）や戦前の名女優である川上貞奴、その夫の音二郎などをモチーフにした楽曲があり、この辺りは今の日本人でも古い日本文化に見識の広い者しかわからない人物ではあるのだが、その時代のムードを反映させたこれらの楽曲には、日本人のDNAの奥底に刻まれた郷愁感溢れる原風景を呼び起こす不思議な力を宿している。

しかし、彼の才能をいち早く察知し作品をリリースしたのがEvening ChantsやKITCHEN. LABELというシンガポールのレーベルだというから実に興味深い。同じアジア人ということで彼の楽曲の魅力に惹かれることは想定でき得るが、しかし、欧米のアンビエント・ミュージック界でもその実力が認められていることを考えれば、ただのエキゾチック興味からくる支持ではないことは明白であろう。 

そう、彼の真骨頂は空気感や質感といった感覚的なイメージを映像喚起させることであり、誰もが持つナイーヴな心象風景を呼び起こすサウンド構築に他ならない。だからこそ、国や人種、文化を飛び越えてそれぞれの “魂” を奮い起こすことができるのだと思う。
