Penguinrush might be Nagoya’s best kept secret. In three years, the young quartet have put out three records, all of which are unique and distinct evolutions on their sound. While Kaikuushiki doesn’t quite reach the heights of last year’s Shichijoumai (possibly my favourite album of 2019), Kaikuushiki sees the band embark for the third time on a genre-hopping adventure that blurs the lines of j-pop, R&B, jazz, alternative rock, bossa nova and electronica.

Frontwoman and songwriter Miyo eschews rhythm guitar for a marked improvement in her vocal performance, giving more space for pianist Mayu to lay down a variety of elaborate and yet immediately catchy and accessible harmonies — Edoga-Sullivan’s Haruka Sakamoto dishes out some tasteful riffage when guitars do make an appearance. It’ll be a crime if these guys aren’t one of Japan’s biggest bands within the next few years.

ペンギンラッシュは名古屋で一番秘密めいた存在かもしれない。女2名・男2名からなるこの4人組は3年間で3枚のアルバムをリリースし、そのどれもが個性豊かで、かつ歴然たる進化を遂げた成長の軌跡でもある。『皆空色』は、2019年に発表された『七情舞』（おそらくこの年の僕のフェイヴァリット・アルバム）の高みには達していないかもしれないが、彼らが J-POP や R&B、ジャズ、オルタナティヴ・ロック、ボサノヴァ、エレクトロニカなどのジャンルを飛び越えるための、3度目の冒険へとチャレンジしたことを意味しているのだ。 

フロントウーマンでソングライターでもある望世はリズム・ギターを肩から降ろし、ヴォーカル・パフォーマンスを著しく向上させた。その分、真結の弾くキーボードを打ち出し、秀逸で親しみやすいピアノ音が全面的に奏でられている。また、エドガー・サリヴァンの坂本遥がギターで参加し、センスのいいリフを披露している。この数年のうちに、彼らが日本でもっとも大きなバンドのひとつになっていなければ、それは何かしらの罪に問われるだろう。
